Making cheesesteak rolls

Let me start off by saying, this is not a how to post. This is a, I tried something new and it came out kinda good post, haha.  Two nights ago I made steak with potatoes and salad. It was delicious.

My steak dinner from the other night

I didn’t make all of the steak at that time so the next night I was thinking about how I could make the steak that was different from what we had the night before. I’m not sure where the idea came from because honestly I don’t think I’ve ever had a cheese steak roll. I think it may have been the native Philadelphian in me craving a flavor from my youth because that was all I could think about yesterday.

We got home from an impromptu and unexpectedly long walk and I’m thinking about how behind I am. I typically try to start dinner at 4pm so we can be eating by 5-5:30. We didn’t get back from our walk until 4:45 and then my infant needed to nurse.  Here I was at 5pm just starting dinner and trying to make something I had never made before.

First and foremost I  learned I need sharper knives. When I tried to thinly slice the steak, I could not get thin enough slices. I told myself That was ok.  I am figuring it out. The steak is going to be a little thicker, no big deal.

Secondly, when I decided to look up a recipe I saw some people were using rice paper to make them. I said to myself in my most pompous voice “that’s cheating, let me find a different recipe”. When I found one where you made the shell from scratch I realized it was a yeasted dough. I don’t know why but I figured it would be more like a pastry dough.  Still, it’s ok. I have yeast, I can make a yeasted dough I thought to myself . That’s when I remember it was already after 530. I did not have the time to let the dough rise. That’s when I remembered I had rice paper in my cabinet! Oh how the pompous has fallen haha.

So here I am at 5:45 trying to figure out how to roll these things.  The direction said to quickly wet them and roll. My rolls had holes in half of them!

Then the wrapper was a little gummy so I’m like ok, let’s try putting a little dough around them and frying them in a pan. My whole house was smoking! I tried putting a few in the air fryer and it just did not look appetizing.

At the end of the day the filling which was steak, shredded cheddar cheese and sauerkraut was delicious. The wrapping, not so much. It was fun though and a learning experience. I’m looking forward to trying them again.
